Grabher survives stern opening test at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships as 16-year-old Wobker announces herself
Magaluf (Calvià), 12 October 2026. Monday's action at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships was highlighted by a breakthrough performance from Germany's Ida Wobker, who, at just 16 years old, secured a place in the main draw of a WTA tournament for the first time in her career after a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Spain's Cristina Díaz Adrover.
The young German has quickly emerged as one of the players to watch at this year's event, underlining the tournament's role as a platform for some of the most promising talents in international women's tennis.
Elsewhere in the main draw, Malta's Francesca Curmi came from a set down to defeat Dutch player Eva Vedder 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 and progress to the next round. Czech second seed Linda Samson also booked her place in the next stage after overcoming Spain's Andrea Teixidó García 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Top seed Julia Grabher was forced to dig deep against Italy's Deborah Chiesa. After dropping the opening set, the Austrian fought back impressively to claim a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory and keep her title hopes firmly on track in Magaluf.
Bulgaria's Rositsa Dencheva Yaneva produced one of the comeback performances of the day against Italy's Jennifer Ruggeri. Having lost the opening set 6-1, Yaneva edged a tight second set in a tie-break before completing a 1-6, 7-6, 6-1 turnaround to reach the next round.
Spain's Andrea Lázaro García also advanced after defeating Morocco's Yasmine Kabbaj 7-6, 6-0. Following a closely contested opening set settled in a tie-break, Lázaro raised her level significantly in the second set to secure victory and maintain Spanish interest in the tournament.
Qualifying action saw Ukraine's Daria Yesypchuk defeat top qualifying seed Lidia Encheva of Bulgaria 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. France's Laia Nguyen Tan overcame Spain's Rosa Roura Llaverias 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, while Czech player Alena Kucmova rallied past Spain's Marina García Cid 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Despite her loss in qualifying, Lidia Encheva will remain in the tournament after gaining entry to the main draw as a lucky loser following the withdrawal of Caijsa Hennemann. The Bulgarian youngster now has a second chance to make an impact in Magaluf.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with the second day of Round of 32 singles action. Spanish hopes will be led by fourth seed Marina Bassols Ribera, while fellow Spaniards Alejandra Geerlings, Andrea Mintegi del Olmo and Lucía Cortez Llorca will also be aiming to progress in front of the home crowd.
Play gets underway at 10:00 a.m. across all three courts. Among the standout matches are Bassols Ribera's clash with qualifier Ida Wobker, Alejandra Geerlings' meeting with Tea Kovacevic, and third seed Noma Noha Akugue's opening-round encounter against Rebeka Masarova.
