Cristina Díaz produces stunning comeback as Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships main draw is unveiled
Magaluf, 11 October 2026. Local player Cristina Díaz Adrover delivered the standout performance of Sunday's qualifying action at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships, fighting back from a set down to defeat seventh seed Sapfo Sakellaridi and book her place in the final round of qualifying at the WTA 125 event in Magaluf.
On a day marked by sunny conditions, strong spectator attendance, a major upset in the qualifying draw and the official main draw ceremony, Díaz kept local hopes alive with an impressive 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
The Mallorcan, competing on a wild card, made a difficult start against Sakellaridi, who dominated the opening set. Díaz, however, showed remarkable resilience in the second set, raising her intensity from the baseline and levelling the contest with a 6-4 response.
Backed by the home crowd and growing in confidence, Díaz completed the turnaround in the deciding set to secure one of the most notable victories of the day and move within one match of a place in the main draw.
Fellow Mallorcan Marta Sagristà Bermejo was unable to join her in the next round, falling 6-1, 6-4 to fourth seed Léa Nguyen Tan of France after producing an improved display in the second set.
Ida Wobker claims the upset of the day
The qualifying competition once again highlighted the depth of emerging talent in women's tennis, with several unexpected results across the draw.
The biggest surprise came courtesy of Germany's Ida Wobker, who at just 16 years of age stunned third seed Lia Karatancheva of Bulgaria 6-0, 6-4 in one of the most eye-catching performances of the tournament so far.
Spanish players Marina García Cid and Ruth Roura Llaverias also impressed, recording victories over seeded opponents Amandine Hesse and Anna Laboutkova respectively to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Main draw ceremony sets the path to the title
Alongside Sunday's on-court action, the tournament's main draw ceremony took place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Mallorca, the official players' hotel.
The ceremony was attended by WTA Supervisor Scott Elbin and Tournament Director Niko Paunovic.
Spanish player Lucía Cortez assisted with the draw, while tournament mascot Champi added a light-hearted touch to one of the key moments ahead of main-draw competition.
The draw has now set the roadmap to the title in an edition that once again brings established WTA competitors and some of the game's most promising young talents to Calvià and Magaluf.
Among the headline first-round match-ups are top seed Julia Grabher of Austria against Italy's Deborah Chiesa, former Top 30 player Tamara Zidanšek against Greece's Despina Papamichail, and Spain's Andrea Lázaro García taking on Morocco's Yasmine Kabbaj.
Elsewhere, Spanish hopeful Lucía Cortez has been drawn against eighth seed Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia.
The tournament continues on Monday with the final round of qualifying and the opening matches of the main draw, as the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships enters a decisive stage of competition in Magaluf.
