Solana Sierra and Andrea Lázaro move into the quarterfinals
Another bright and lively day at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women’s Championships presented by ecotrans Group (WTA 125) brought excitement and surprises to both the Mallorca Country Club and TC Magaluf, which hosted its final day of play before all matches move to Santa Ponça.
Top seed Solana Sierra (ARG) confirmed her status as tournament favourite with a solid win over Guiomar Maristany Zuleta de Reales (ESP), earning her place in the quarterfinals (7-5, 6-4). Sierra will continue her campaign on Thursday at the Mallorca Country Club, looking to reach the semifinals.
Spain’s Andrea Lázaro García, 30, from Barcelona, also celebrated a major win, defeating Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 after more than two hours of intense baseline play.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Serbian qualifier Teodora Kostovic pulled off the upset of the day, defeating second seed Mayar Sherif (EGY) 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. An emotional Kostovic thanked the Mallorca crowd in Spanish: “Gracias por animarme, me siento muy feliz de jugar aquí.”
In another three-set match, Ekaterine Gorgodze (GEO) edged past Oksana Selekhmeteva (RUS) 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Germany also had reason to celebrate as Noma Noha Akugue and Mariella Thamm reached the doubles semifinals, winning 1-6, 6-0, 10-8 against Alicia Barnett / Elixane Lechemia. The Czech duo Jesika Maleckova / Miriam Skoch advanced 6-3, 7-6, and Dalila Jakupovic / Nika Radisic (SLO) moved through after a retirement from Gorgodze / Semenistaja (4-1 RET).
