Qualifying results: Monnet, Hodzic, Spiteri and Kostovic advance to the main draw
The qualifying rounds of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women’s Championships presented by ecotrans Group concluded on Sunday at the Mallorca Country Club and TC Magaluf, determining the four players who earned their place in the main draw.
Mina Hodzic (GER) earned her spot with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Yelyzaveta Kotliar (UKR) after a tight second-set tiebreak. Dalila Spiteri (ITA) defeated Fanny Norin (SWE) 6-2, 6-1; Carole Monnet (FRA) came from behind to overcome Aneta Kucmova (CZE) 4-6, 6-2, 6-0; and Teodora Kostovic (SRB) beat Ekaterina Kazionova (RUS) 6-2, 6-2.
Following injury withdrawals from Bernarda Pera (USA) and Maja Chwalinska (POL), Yelyzaveta Kotliar (UKR) and Aneta Kucmova (CZE) entered the main draw as Lucky Losers. For Kucmova, the spot was well-deserved – she had fallen to Monnet in the only three-set match of the day, showing great determination and fighting spirit throughout.
Main draw play began later on Sunday at the Mallorca Country Club, marking the official start of the new WTA 125 tournament in Calvià.
Due to injuries to Bernarda Pera (USA) and Maja Chwalinska (POL), Yelyzaveta Kotliar and Aneta Kucmova entered the main draw as Lucky Losers. For Kucmova, the entry was particularly well-deserved after a hard-fought three-set match against Monnet — the only one of the day to go the distance.
