Four Spaniards storm into the next round at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships

Magaluf (Calvià), 13 October 2026 – Spanish players enjoyed an outstanding day at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships as Marina Bassols Ribera, Alejandra Geerlings, Andrea Mintegi del Olmo and Lucía Cortez Llorca all booked their places in the next round in Magaluf.

Marina Bassols Ribera underlined her status as one of the leading contenders for the title with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory over German teenager Ida Wobker. The Spaniard halted the momentum of one of the tournament's breakout stories and progressed comfortably to the Round of 16.

There was further success for the home contingent as Alejandra Geerlings defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina's Tea Kovacevic 6-2, 6-4 to continue her run in the tournament, while Andrea Mintegi del Olmo produced one of the most dominant performances of the day, dispatching Ukraine's Anastasiya Sobolieva 6-2, 6-2.

Joining them in the next round is wildcard Lucía Cortez Llorca, who claimed one of the standout wins of the day by knocking out eighth seed Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia 6-4, 7-6.

Elsewhere in the draw, Italy's Nuria Brancaccio defeated Brazil's Laura Pigossi 6-0, 6-4, while sixth seed Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia overcame Greece's Despina Papamichail 6-4, 6-2.

French players also enjoyed a productive day, with Carole Monnet easing past Ukraine's Daria Yesypchuk 6-2, 6-2 and Laia Nguyen Tan defeating Germany's Ella Bennemann 6-4, 6-1.

The biggest upset of the day came with the exit of third seed Noma Noha Akugue. Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova produced a composed display to secure a 6-4, 6-3 victory and remove one of the pre-tournament favourites from the draw.

Bulgaria's Lidia Encheva, who entered the event as a lucky loser, extended her stay in Magaluf with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Czech player Aneta Kucmova.

The day's action was rounded off by Germany's Joelle Steur, who defeated compatriot Mia Hodzic 6-4, 6-3 to move into the next round.

Attention now turns to Wednesday's play, which will feature another full day of singles action alongside the start of the doubles competition. Following Tuesday's impressive win, Marina Bassols Ribera will open proceedings on Centre Court at 10am against Malta's Francesca Curmi, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Local interest will centre on Mallorca's Yvonne Cavallé-Reimers, the last remaining player from the island still competing in the tournament. Cavallé-Reimers and Brazil's Laura Pigossi are scheduled to make their doubles debut no earlier than 1pm on Centre Court against France's Estelle Cascino and Bulgaria's Lia Karatancheva.

Away from the court, the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women's Championships received ISO 14064 carbon footprint certification on Tuesday following an assessment carried out by GO2 by Global Omnium, the tournament's Green Sponsor.
